5 Days Out From Washington’s Vote By Mail Primary, Carolyn Long Calls on Rep. Herrera Beutler to Speak Up to Protect Safe, Secure Elections
While President Trump has dangerously suggested delaying the election and sowed mistrust of voting by mail, Carolyn Long is renewing calls to protect our democracy and election security
Vancouver, WA — Today, the President of the United States took to Twitter to suggest that we delay the November election and continued his attacks on voting by mail. At a time when our election security is being attacked by hostile foreign actors and the right to vote is being threatened here at home, it is important that we commit to protecting our democracy and expanding people’s ability to safely and securely vote by mail. Five days out from Primary Election day here in Washington State, the Carolyn Long campaign is calling on Jaime Herrera Beutler to state where she stands on this most critical issue.
In 2020, as we face a pandemic that has claimed over 150,000 American lives and completely devastated our economy, running a safe, fair election is more important than ever. As shown by the most recent reporting, the US economy suffered its worst drop on record from April through June — a drop in which small businesses are being hit the hardest and feeling left behind by our government. The scale of the challenges we face, and the need to have a recovery that puts small businesses and working families first, requires bold new leadership that puts people ahead of politics and tackles these crises head on — and our democracy is the key to achieving it.
“The president’s suggestion that we delay the election is a dangerous, unconstitutional idea to present at a time when our democracy is under threat,” said Carolyn Long. “This is also a fundamental question of leadership, and we deserve to know where our current Representative stands on the issue. In Washington state, we’ve held safe, secure vote by mail elections for years — and 2020 will be no different. We must continue, together, to do the hard work of ensuring that our democracy is accessible and safe for all citizens to have their voices heard — and Congress must take immediate action to protect our election security and the right to vote.”
