New Poll Shows Long and Herrera Beutler Neck-and-Neck

Carolyn Long campaign releases internal poll showing them at 47-49, with just five weeks until election day

VANCOUVER, WA — With just five weeks until election day, Carolyn Long, candidate for Congress in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, is within the margin of error against five-term incumbent Jaime Herrera Beutler, according to an internal poll.

The poll conducted by GQR showed that Long is gaining ground, trailing behind just two points.

“The campaign to represent Southwest Washington in Congress is more competitive than ever —and the stakes have never been higher,” said Abby Olmstead, Campaign Manager for Carolyn Long. “In 2020, we face the choice between reelecting a career politician who has spent a decade staying silent, who is never available to her constituents, and who is continuously working with Trump to dismantle access to healthcare, or Carolyn — who will be hard-working, present, and accountable. She’s already released a plan to get the district back on track and on the road to recovery from this pandemic. She will be a representative that always puts the people of Southwest Washington first.”

GQR conducted a poll of 400 likely general election voters. The poll was conducted via live dial interviewing from September 24th—26th. The survey has a margin of error of +/- 4.9 percentage points at the 95 percent confidence interval. Key findings include:

  • Five-term incumbent Herrera Beutler is under 50%. Long trails by just two points with Long at 47% and Herrera Beutler at 49%. Four percent of voters undecided.

  • Long is viewed more favorably than Herrera Beutler. Long holds a net +11 favorability rating, compared to Herrera Beutler’s +5 rating.

  • Joe Biden is tied with Donald Trump in the district. Biden is statistically tied with Trump at 47-48%, with 6% of voters undecided.

Long Releases Anti-Corruption Plan to Get Big Money out of Politics

‘I am determined to be a different kind of representative – one who will put people ahead of special interests’

VANCOUVER, WA
Carolyn Long, candidate for Congress in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District released an anti-corruption plan to address the corrosive role of big money in politics.

READ: CAROLYN LONG’S ANTI-CORRUPTION PLAN

“I am determined to be a different kind of representative – one who will put people ahead of special interests,” said Long. “That’s why one of my first priorities in Congress will be to get big money out of n politics, increase the transparency of money spent in political campaigns, clean up the revolving door of lobbyists in D.C., and improve congressional ethical rules. It is the only way to make our government truly work for us.”

Carolyn Long is committed to Southwest Washington and refuses corporate PAC money. She is also endorsed by End Citizens United. Long has repeatedly called out Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler for voting in favor of her corporate donors’ interests and taking more than 1.6 million dollars in corporate PAC donations.

“I am committed to being an ally in Congress for the people of Southwest Washington—not a shill for corporate donors,” said Long. “Jaime Herrera Beutler is bought off by corporate special interests. In return, she sold out Southwest Washington, year after year. This cycle has gone on long enough. It’s time to start putting people over politics—it’s time for a fresh start.”

Long’s full plan includes:

  • Banning corporate PACs from contributing to political candidates

  • Passing a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United and eliminate super PACs

  • Closing loopholes to get foreign money out of our elections

  • Fixing the broken Federal Elections Commission by adding a non-partisan member and ensuring political parties cannot deny it a quorum by refusing to confirm nominees while allowing it to conduct audits once more

  • Banning members of Congress from lobbying for life

  • Banning members of Congress from trading individual stocks so there is no question about whom they are working for

  • Ending the revolving door between the executive branch and lobbying industry

  • Eliminating “shadow lobbyists”

  • Empowering and protect ethics oversight entities that root out lawbreaking

Carolyn Long is running for Congress in Southwest Washington (WA-03) for the 2020 election. She previously was the Democratic nominee for Washington’s 3rd District in 2018. She resides in Vancouver with her family and teaches at WSU-Vancouver. Long has served Southwest Washington for more than 25 years, as a WSU college professor and community leader. ICYMI Long Receives Endorsement from Clark County Newspaper, The Columbian

‘Carolyn Long is the superior choice to represent Washington’s 3rd Congressional District’

VANCOUVER, WACarolyn Long, candidate for Congress in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District received the endorsement from The Columbian, which serves Vancouver and greater Clark County.

The Columbian recommends Long for WA-03 because of her commitment to the community in being present and accountable to them.

“Our recommendation hinges on Long’s demonstrated ability to meet with and listen to constituents throughout the district; her understanding of economic policy; and her understanding of Congress’ role in holding the executive branch accountable.”

The Columbian concluded that she was the “superior choice to represent the Third.” Read the full endorsement from The Columbian below.

“I am honored to receive The Columbian’s endorsement for the second time,” said Long. “In Congress, I will fight hard every day to bring affordable healthcare, family-wage jobs, and will only work for Southwest Washington. We desperately need new leadership to guide us out of this economic and public health crisis. And we need a leader who will listen. I will continue to listen to Southwest Washington by holding town halls, roundtable conversations on policy issues, and Coffees with Carolyn in our community.”

Abby Olmstead, Campaign Manager said, “Like many Southwest Washingtonians, The Columbian recognizes that our leadership has failed us. Small businesses continue to close, people are out of work, and our infrastructure is crumbling, all while D.C. politicians prioritize their corporate donors over their own constituency. It’s clearer than ever that it’s time for a change.”

Read the full endorsement below:

Although each will try to portray the other as an extremist, congressional candidates Carolyn Long and Jaime Herrera Beutler are relatively moderate representatives of their parties. Each is capable of being an effective voice for Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, and each has demonstrated a strong understanding of the issues that impact our region.

The Columbian Editorial Board recommends a vote for Democratic challenger Carolyn Long against Herrera Beutler, the Republican incumbent. As always, this is merely a recommendation; The Columbian trusts that voters will study the candidates and the issues before casting an informed ballot.

Our recommendation hinges on Long’s demonstrated ability to meet with and listen to constituents throughout the district; her understanding of economic policy; and her understanding of Congress’ role in holding the executive branch accountable.

Long, a political science professor who lost to Herrera Beutler by 5 percentage points two years ago, built her 2018 campaign on a series of town hall meetings. That strategy has been hampered this year by social distancing, but it reflects her willingness to engage with constituents ranging from Goldendale to Long Beach. Herrera Beutler has not held an in-person town hall since early 2017, opting instead to answer selected questions on conference calls.

Long also demonstrates a strong understanding of economics. During a joint interview with the editorial board, Herrera Beutler defended the tax cuts and spending increases she supported in 2018, inaccurately claiming that the federal deficit was decreasing before the pandemic scuttled the economy. Long said: “We were told two years ago that the Republicans’ tax plan was going to pay for itself. We learned that within a year, a trillion dollars was added to the federal debt. That’s money that my daughter is going to pay for.”

Herrera Beutler also lauds President Trump’s economic policies and tariffs. Those policies devastated American farming prior to the pandemic, with taxpayers shelling out $28 billion in aid to farmers over two years.

Meanwhile, Herrera Beutler revealed to the editorial board that she plans to vote for Trump in his bid for reelection. In 2016, she declined to support Trump and says she voted for then-Rep. Paul Ryan as a write-in candidate. Last year, she voted against the House of Representatives’ impeachment of the president, at one point calling the proceedings a “farce.”

Regarding checks and balances, Long said, “Congress needs to reassert itself.”

Herrera Beutler has some strong selling points to warrant a sixth term in Washington, D.C. Those include a genuine ability to work in a bipartisan fashion and to focus on the needs of Southwest Washington. She has been active in trying to reduce sea lion predation on salmon in the Columbia River and in developing measures to reduce maternal mortality. Her work often focuses on health care issues, but we disagree with her frequent votes to overturn the Affordable Care Act without offering a viable alternative. For her part, Long supports strengthening the Affordable Care Act but does not support Medicare-for-all.

It is impossible to paint a complete picture of either candidate’s positions in a single editorial, and we recommend that voters do their homework rather than believe what they see in TV ads. Video of The Columbian’s interview is available online, and both candidates have agreed to debate on Oct. 9.

But in our opinion, Carolyn Long is the superior choice to represent Washington’s 3rd Congressional District.

After Trump Blames ‘Blue States’ for Increasing Coronavirus Death Rates, Long Calls Out Herrera Beutler for her Silence on President’s Actions

VANCOUVER, WA —Today Carolyn Long, candidate for Congress in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District responded to President Trump’s suggestion that “blue states” are to blame for increasing the nation’s death rate from coronavirus. He stated, “if you take the blue states out, we’re at a level I don’t think anybody in the world would be at.”

“COVID-19 doesn’t discriminate against red states or blue states—it impacts all Americans, regardless of where they live,” said Long.

“I’ve been encouraged by Southwest Washingtonians stepping up, putting their lives on hold, and practicing responsible social distancing. Despite these sacrifices, the president failed Southwest Washington. He repeatedly downplayed the virus over the last six months, despite knowing how deadly it was.

“And now, with expanded unemployment benefits expired over a month ago, Washingtonians jobless, and too many small businesses closed for good, the president, Congress, and Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, have failed to do their job and pass additional legislation to protect Americans and put conditions in place for economic recovery.

“Is Jaime Herrera Beutler going to speak up for her constituents? And call out the president for his rhetoric and inaction? We’re used to silence from our representative, but we deserve better,” said Long.

Carolyn Long is running for Congress in Southwest Washington (WA-03) for the 2020 election. She previously was the Democratic nominee for Washington’s 3rd District in 2018. Wildfires Show Southwest Washington’s Void in Leadership on Climate Change and Disaster Relief

‘Congresswoman Herrera Beutler needs to wake up —Washington is burning around her’

VANCOUVER WA —Today Carolyn Long, candidate for Congress in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District called for leadership to address climate change and disaster relief.

“This unprecedented wildfire season highlights the dire need for leadership on climate change and disaster relief,” said Long. “We are so lucky to live in such a pristine corner of the country and it’s heartbreaking to see our community swallowed in smoke, and neighbors forced to evacuate.”

“Jaime Herrera Beutler has accepted more than $170,000 from the oil and gas industry, selling out Southwest Washingtonians by voting again and again against efforts to fight climate change and hold corporate polluters accountable,” said Abby Olmstead, Long’s campaign manager.

Scientific American, a popular science magazine, urged Americans to vote for Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden on Tuesday, calling the upcoming election “literally a matter of life and death.” This marks the first time Scientific American has ever endorsed a president in its 175-year history.

“Congresswoman Herrera Beutler needs to wake up —Washington is burning around her,” said Long. “She’s sat by, silent, while Trump rolls back protections for our environment. There is no time to waste in protecting our environment. We need a strong leader with commitment to environmental stewardship—not Jaime Herrera Beutler.”

Long’s New Ad Shows Jaime Herrera Beutler is ‘Bought’

VANCOUVER, WAToday, Carolyn Long, candidate for Congress in Washington’s 3rd Congressional district, launched a new television ad, Bought. The new 30 second ad explains how Jaime Herrera Beutler sold out Southwest Washington in exchange for 1.6 million dollars in corporate PAC donations, voting in the interests of her donors, and buying into Donald Trump.

“Jaime Herrera Beutler is bought off by corporate interests; bought into Donald Trump, and sold out Southwest Washington,” said Abby Olmstead, Long’s Campaign Manager. “We need fresh, new leadershipand Carolyn Long is that leader.”

“Long can’t be bought. This November, Southwest Washington has a choice: Jaime Herrera Beutler, who spent the past 10 years voting in favor of corporate interests, or Carolyn Long, who refuses corporate PAC money and is committed to Southwest Washington,” said Olmstead.

SCRIPT: Bought

I’m Carolyn Long, and I approve this message.

Jaime Herrera Beutler said…

“I wouldn’t be opposed to support from anybody”

Bought off by corporate special interests…

And when Trump wanted to give them billions in tax giveaways…

She bought in.. to him…

….Even his attempt to dismantle our healthcare during a pandemic.

Now, she’s buying in again….

“Are you going to vote for Trump this year?”

“I am”

Jaime Herrera Beutler ….bought off by them…

Bought in on Trump.

On Patriots’ Day, Long Calls for Remembrance and Unity

VANCOUVER, WAToday Carolyn Long, candidate for Congress in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District honored the victims of the September 11 terror attacks and the first responders, military service members, and volunteers who came forward to serve in a remarkable spirit of patriotism.

“Today, on the 19th anniversary of the September 11 terror attacks, we must never forget the women and men who lost and risked their lives that day,” said Long.

Long took time to volunteer in Clark County at the food bank, packing food boxes. Since 2001, millions of Americans have come together with a common purpose on the September 11th National Day of Service and Remembrance to commemorate the tragedy through volunteer service and remembrance activities.

“Many have been inspired to turn this day of tragedy into a day of good. And today is a day of remembrance and unity. It’s time to recommit ourselves to public service, and bettering our communities and country.”

Long Expresses Support for First Responders, Calls for Climate Action and Forest Management to Reduce Future Wildfires

VANCOUVER, WA—Carolyn Long, candidate for Congress in Washington’s 3rd Congressional District, issued the following statement about the Pacific Northwest fires:

“Thank you to all of  our first responders—from firefighters to linemen—for swiftly responding and continuing to contain fires and keep the lights on in Southwest Washington. It is heartbreaking to see reports of people in Washington losing their homes and livelihoods to these fires. Seeing the smoke in our communities, the families having to evacuate, and the places where we love to hike, swim and fish, like the Gifford Pinchot Forest, burn, is devastating.

“Southwest Washingtonians: please continue to listen for directions from local officials and take necessary precautions to stay safe.

“Climate change is a real, human-caused crisis that requires our immediate action. There isn’t time to waste. This unprecedented wildfire season has already damaged some of the most pristine areas of Southwest Washington and we can’t let it keep happening. We can protect our natural resources, industries, and way of life in Southwest Washington by working hard to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and utilize better forest management to prevent fires and further destruction from continuing.

“We have to fight back to ensure a healthier and safer future. We must ensure that future generations can enjoy fishing for Rainbow Trout in the Swift Reservoir and hiking with their families in the Gifford Pinchot Forest.” said Long.

Long’s Pandemic Plan fills Leadership Void

On Friday, Long hosted public town hall on Facebook

VANCOUVER, WA — On Friday, Carolyn Long held a town hall on her pandemic recovery plan that will lift up Southwest Washington families, prioritize small businesses and economic development, and strengthen and expand affordable access to health care.

Long’s plan calls for Congress to pass an economic recovery package which includes emergency short-term relief for families, and expanding support or small businesses. To jumpstart our economy, she calls for transformational investments in our infrastructure, which will create jobs, stimulate future economic growth, and rebuild crumbling roads and bridges and expand high-speed broadband to every community in Southwest Washington.

Read key excerpts from the Town Hall below and watch the full event here.

Key Excerpts

VIDEO: ON WHY WE NEED A PANDEMIC RECOVERY PLAN

The White House and Congress has failed to really support us by addressing the concerns people have about unemployment compensation that allows them to feed their families; not having enough resources for small businesses still struggling or ones that are not covered by the current programs. Frankly I saw a void in leadership. In times of crisis, people need to see leaders willing to fight for them.

VIDEO: ON HOW THE PLAN GETS WORKING FAMILIES BACK ON THEIR FEET

There are a number of barriers that exist that are addressed in my plan. We need to have paid family sick leave so that folks can take care of their health. The other thing this plan addresses is inadequate access to affordable childcare. Nearly 60 percent of child care facilities were shuttered due to the coronavirus. We need to take advantage of block grants for those facilities to get up and running safely, so that parents have a place for their children.

VIDEO: ON HOW THE PLAN HELPS SMALL BUSINESSES

I saw firsthand the trials and tribulations of owning a small business in America — and we struggled. My priority right now is to immediately help those businesses that are really relying on Congress to keep the doors open. I essentially need to stop the bleeding and provide them assistance to reopen or find new investments in the economy to create new jobs and opportunities. We need to keep aggressively talking about what is happening right now, not taking victory laps around what happened six months ago.

Long’s full plan includes recommendations for a COVID-19 pandemic recovery that yields a stronger America:

  • Extend the unemployment insurance expansion

  • Give our schools access to the resources they need to reopen safely

  • Invest in our infrastructure to employ those out of work and set the conditions in place for a robust economy

  • Strengthen and prioritize our small business recovery

  • Invest in job training for those out of work or employed in industries negatively affected by the pandemic

  • Increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour

  • Ensure affordable child care for all families and a robust child care industry, while expanding to universal Pre-K

  • Expand paid sick and family leave

  • Impose a moratorium on consumer and small business debt collection – including student loan debt – for the duration of this crisis

  • Ensure strong oversight of recovery funding to ensure aid goes where it’s needed most

  • Protect The Affordable Care Act and create a public option that will provide quality and affordable health coverage to any American that wants it

  • Strengthen our rural health care system, and protect rural hospitals

  • Boost public health funding and responsibly manage infectious disease programs to ensure we are prepared for future threats and to stop the next pandemic before it starts
