Carolyn Long Calls out D.C for Inadequate Response to the Health and Economic Crisis
Vancouver, WA– Carolyn Long released a statement regarding the COVID-19 pandemic’s acceleration of the ongoing rural health crisis in Southwest Washington and how the response from Washington, D.C has left working families and small businesses behind:
For decades, Southwest Washington has seen cuts to our rural hospitals and the essential services they provide in keeping our communities safe and healthy. It is devastating to see the extent to which the COVID-19 crisis has accelerated this reality, but it’s not surprising. We are suffering the consequences of a decades-long failure of leadership in this country — one in which D.C. politicians have repeatedly put short term partisan political fights and politically popular decisions over the long-term priorities we need to strengthen our communities.
Meanwhile, the solutions that have come from D.C have not adequately addressed the hardship that working families and small businesses in Southwest Washington are facing during this crisis. This week, it is being reported that the federal government has given millions of dollars to large corporations and national chains while thousands of small businesses have been unable to secure the funding they desperately need to stay afloat. This lack of support for small businesses is unacceptable. In the face of COVID-19, the federal government needs to step up and deliver the funding and the oversight our communities need to get through the crisis at hand.
“Our rural hospitals, small businesses, and working families are being left behind without the support we’ve been promised. Our rural hospitals are lacking the funding, resources, and tests we need; our small businesses have been left high and dry as large corporations and chains taking advantage of loopholes and high-priced lobbyists to gobble up resources intended for local companies; this situation has been made worse by D.C. politicians and a federal government that has been consistently too slow to respond to this crisis, ” said Congressional Candidate Carolyn Long. “The coronavirus crisis has only further demonstrated the severity of the crisis in leadership in the other Washington. Now more than ever, we need a leader who will step up, fight for our working families and small business, and truly deliver results for Southwest Washington, not lobbyists, chains, and big corporations.”
